Robby the Robot
This month we are featuring box art from one of the finest
tin toy robots, based on the robot from
the classic science fiction movie, Forbidden Planet.
The actual toy robot (not pictured), is a tin windup toy that
is 9 1/2" tall, with beautiful color litho on its chest plate and on
its face piece.
The art on the left and below is from the toy's box,
which is a limited edition release from Planet Earth Productions in 1993.
This version was created with the same manufacturing process used in
the 1950's golden age of classic tin toys, by the Billiken Shokai
Company of Japan. The original was from the 1960s.
If you click on either the picture on the left or below, you will
see a much enlarged version of the artwork. The actual box cover is
5" wide X 9 1/2" high X 3" deep. It's worth the
download time (129K) --
this is the Van Gogh of robot box art.
From the collection of Philip Rubin.
