Smoking Robot
Smoking Robot

From the collection of Philip Rubin.

This battery-operated tin robot is a masterful creation designed by Rikizo Miyazawa and manufactured by Yonezawa in Japan in the 1950s.

T. Kitihara, in his book Robots: Tin Toy Dreams, says: "When set in motion, the robot walks forward while throwing off sparks; it stops to breathe out smoke and flash its eyes before walking forward again. The unsophisticated design adds to its robot image, while the facial expression has a human quality."
